With an extraordinarily diverse repertoire and charismatic performance style, John Axelrod continues to increase his profile as one of today's leading conductors and is sought after by orchestras throughout the world.

After a successful five year tenure as Music Director and Chief Conductor of the Luzerner Sinfonie Orchester and Theater, John Axelrod was elected in April, 2009, to become Music Director of the l'Orchestre National des Pays de la Loire (ONPL), based in Nantes and Angers, France. The unanimous decision follows highly successful concerts and the sensational production of Tristan and Isolde, for Angers/Nantes Opera, directed by Olivier Py.  Mr. Axelrod assumed the title of Music Director Designate with the 2009-2010 season, and commences his full duties as Music Director for the 2010-2011 season for a minimum 3 year term.

In 2009, John Axelrod was named Music Director of the "Hollywood in Vienna" Film Music Gala Concert with the ORF Radio Symphony Orchestra Vienna. Performed every year in the Vienna Konzerthaus, the red carpet concert event and symposium honors the contribution of Vienna's composers to the development of the Hollywood Sound and celebrates the many composers who have been influenced by that legacy.

During summer 2009, Mr. Axelrod made a unique European and North American tour at the invitation of Chinese pianist Lang Lang and legendary jazz musicians Herbie Hancock. European cities and orchestras included the Montreux Jazz Festival and Lyon with the Orchestre National de Lyon, Arena di Verona, Royal Albert Hall with the London Philharmonia Orchestra, Essen and Rotterdam with the Neue Philharmonie Westphalen, Ravenna and Milano with the Cherubini Orchestra. In North America, Mr. Axelrod returned for the 4th time to the Ravinia Festival with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Mann Center with the Philadelphia Orchestra, New Jersey Performing Arts Center with the New Jersey Symphony, Massey Hall with the Toronto Symphony and he returns to the Hollywood Bowl with the Los Angeles Philharmonic.

Upcoming 2010-2011 season includes nine innovative programs with the ONPL, a European tour with the Dresdener Philharmonic, Hollywood in Vienna with the ORF Radio Symphony Orchester Vienna, debuts with the National Symphony Orchestra in the Kennedy Center, Sinfonia Varsovia in Warsaw, Berlin Konzerthaus Orchester, the Russian Philharmonic Moscow, Graz Philharmonic, Philharmonica Arturo Toscanini, and the Royal Danish National Orchestra, and returns to the Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana di Lugano, Orchestra la Verdi di Milano, Teatro di San Carlo in Naples, Sinfonica della RAI in Turin, NDR RadioPhilharmonie Hannover, Orchestre Philharmonique de Liége Wallonie-Bruxelles, Düsseldorfer Symphoniker, NHK Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra del Teatro della Fenice and a reprise of the Lang Lang/Herbie Hancock tour with the ONPL in Salle Pleyel, Paris and Teatro all Scala.

2009-2010 season highlights included 3 programs with the ONPL, debuts with the NDR Hamburg Symphony, NHK Symphony Orchestra Tokyo, and Stuttgarter Philharmoniker, and returns to the Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana di Lugano, Sinfonica della RAI in Turin, Teatro di San Carlo in Naples, The Chicago Symphony, Het Brabant Orkest in Eindhoven, NDR RadioPhilharmonie Hannover, Orchestra la Verdi di Milano.

During the 2008-09 season, he debuted with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, Orchestra Sinfonica Nazionale della RAI di Torino, Orchestra Verdi in Milano, Royal Stockholm Philharmonic, Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana in Lugano, Teatro Comunale di Bologna Orchestra, Kyoto Symphony, Komische Oper in Berlin, and made return engagements with Orchestre de Paris, Dresden Philharmonie, Lisbon’s Gulbenkian Orchestra, Het Brabant Orkest, Orchestre National Pays de la Loire, among others.  During this season at Luzern, Mr. Axelrod ended his cycle of Beethoven's orchestral works conducting the Ninth Symphony, and led a new production of Mozart's Don Giovanni for the Lucerne Festival.

As a guest conductor, John Axelrod has also worked with the London Philharmonic, Royal Philharmonic, Los Angeles Philharmonic (at the Hollywood Bowl), Philadelphia Orchestra, Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia Orchestra, Oslo Philharmonic, Swedish Radio Orchestra, Shanghai Symphony, at Vienna's Musikverein with the Vienna Radio Symphony, Gurzenich-Orchester Köln, Berlin's Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester, Orchestre National de Lyon, Salzburg Mozarteum, and he is regular guest of the Gewandhaus Orchestra, Orchestre de Paris, Dresden Philharmonic, NDR RadioPhilharmonie of Hannover, Orchestre Philharmonique de Monte-Carlo, Lisbon's Gulbenkian Orchestra, the Hungarian National Philharmonic, among others.

The soloists with whom he often collaborates include, among others: Julia Fischer, Martin Grubinger, Daniel Hope, Patricia Kopatchinskaya, Lang Lang, Rachel Kolly d'Alba, Lilya Silberstein, Sabine Meyer, Fazil Say, Han-Na Chang as well as such vocalists as Thomas Hampson, Elina Garança, Rinat Shaham, Veronique Gens, Dietrich Henschel, Ana Maria Martinez, and Ramon Vargas.

His opera activity includes the premiere performances of Bernstein's Candide (directed by Robert Carsen) at Paris's Théâtre du Châtelet and Milano's Teatro alla Scala, Wagner's Tristan and Isolde for Angers/Nantes Opera, directed by Olivier Py, and the new production of Krenek's Kehraus um St. Stephan at the Bregenz Festspiele. In his past seasons at the Luzerner Theater he conducted new productions of Kaiser von Atlantis, Rigoletto, Rake's Progress (for the Lucerne Festival), Il barbiere di Siviglia, Evgenij Onegin, Three Penny Opera (for the Lucerne Festival), Idomeneo (for the Lucerne Festival), Falstaff and Don Giovanni (for the Lucerne Festival).

As Principal guest conductor of Sinfonietta Cracovia since 2000, Mr. Axelrod has appeared in Europe's leading concert halls, seen on ARTE television, and performed on the grounds of Auschwitz in the Emmy Award winning 2007 BBC Holocaust Memorial Film. Mr. Axelrod is also the founder and conductor laureate of Houston's OrchestraX.

Mr. Axelrod's most recent recordings include Wolfgang Rihm's newly-commissioned piano concerto Sotto Voce II (together with Sotto Voce I) with the Luzerner Sinfonie Orchester and the pianist Nicolas Hodges, Fazil Say's new violin concerto 1001 Nights in a Harem with Patricia Kopatchinskaya and the Luzerner Sinfonie Orchester, 2 discs featuring works by Franz Schreker and his students Ernst Krenek and Julius Burger, and a live recording from the 2006 Lucerne Festival of Bernstein's Third Symphony ('Kaddish'), Schoenberg's Survivor from Warsaw, and Weill's Berliner Requiem, all with the Luzerner Sinfonie Orchester for the Nimbus label; Dvořák's Ninth Symphony with the Württemburgischer Philharmonie Reutlingen for the Genuin label; Works by Wladyslaw Szpilman with the Berlin Radio Orchestra for SonyClassical; and Rolf Wallin's percussion concerto Das war schön! with Martin Grubinger and the Oslo Philharmonic for the Ondine label.

Mr. Axelrod graduated in 1988 from Harvard University. He currently divides his time between Nantes/Angers and Strasbourg, France and is the proud father, with Annette Gerlach, of a daughter, Tallulah.

Annoncé en avril 2009, John Axelrod prendra ses fonctions de Directeur Musical de l'Orchestre National des Pays de la Loire (ONPL), basé à Nantes et Angers, France, en septembre 2010. Cette décision fait suite aux succès des concerts donnés à la tête de l'orchestre lors des précédentes saisons et de la sensationnelle production de Tristan et Isolde pour l'opéra de Angers/Nantes, dirigée par Olivier Py. John Axelrod assume le titre de Directeur Musical Désigné durant la saison 2009-2010, et prendra officiellement ses fonctions comme Directeur Musical en 2010-2011 pour une période d'au moins trois années.

Im Aril 2009 wurde John Axelrod zum Musik Direktor des" Orchestre National des Pays de la Loire" ernannt, beheimatet in Nantes und Angers. Bevor er das Amt ab der Saison 2010/2011 übernimmt, wird er in der laufenden Saison dort als designierter Musik Direktor drei Konzertserien dirigieren und eine Einspielung mit der Mezzospranistin Veronique Gens realisieren.

Als Gastdirigent gab John Axelrod in jüngster Vergangenheit weltweit Konzerte mit zahlreichen renommierten Orchestern (u.a. Weiterhin wird er erstmals beim NDR Sinfonie Orchester Hamburg und beim National Symphony Orchestra in Washington zu Gast sein so wie beim Danish National Orchestra, beim Konzerthaus Orchester in Berlin, beim Russian Philharmonic Orchestra und in Venedig beim Orchestra del Teatro La Fenice.

Seit September 2009 ist John Axelrod Musik Direktor der Filmmusik Gala des ORF Radio-Symphonie Orchesters "Hollywood in Vienna." Opern dirigierte er in letzter Zeit u.a. am Théâtre Chatêlet in Paris und am Teatro della Scala in Mailand, wo er die französische und italianische Erstaufführung der szenischen Inszenierung von Bernsteins "Candide" dirigierte (Regisseur: Robert Carsen). Bei den Brengenzer Festspielen leitete er Ernst Kreneks "Kerhaus um St. Stephan" und an der Angers/Nantes Opéra Wagners "Tristan und Isolde."

Fünf Jahre lang war John Axelrod Chef Dirigent des Luzerner Sinfonieorchesters und Musik Direktor des Luzerner Theaters. In dieser Zeit dirigierte er zahlreiche Opern sowie Uraufführungen (u.a. Don Giovanni, Dreigroschenoper, Falstaff, Eugene Onegin, Rakes Progress, Der Kaiser von Atlantis, Idomeneo, Rigoletto) und dirigierte alljährlich Konzerte sowie Opern beim Lucerne Festival.  Seit 2000 ist er der erste Gastdirigent der Sinfonietta Cracovia. Mit diesem Orchester trat er in den führenden Konzertsälen Europas auf, verbunden mit Fernsehauftritten.

Als "recording artist" hat John Axelrod zahlreiche CD Aufnahmen gemacht, u.a. mit dem Luzerner Sinfonieorchester Bernsteins Symphony No. 3 "Kaddish" und Werke von Franz Schreker und seine Schule für Nimbus Recordings, "1001 Nights in a Harem" von Fazil Say für Näive Records, die Musik von Wladyzlaw Sziplman für Sony Classical mit dem RBB Rundfunk Orchester Berlin, Dvorak Symphony No. 9 mit der Württembergischen Philaharmonie Reutlingen für Genuin Records, "Sotte Voce " von Wolfgang Rihm für das Label Kairos so wie mit Martin Grubinger das Schlagzeug Concerto von Rolf Wallin für Ondine.

Durante i suoi cinque anni come direttore principale della Lucerne Sinfonie Orchestre e direttore musicale del Teatro di Lucerna, ha diretto – fra l’altro – il ciclo integrale delle sinfonie di Beethoven e Schumann, nonché i nuovi allestimenti di Kaiser von Atlantis (per il Lucerne Festival 2004), Rigoletto, Rake's Progress (per il Lucerne Festival 2005), Il barbiere di Siviglia, Evgenij Onegin, Falstaff, Gianni Schicchi con Trouble in Tahiti, L'elisir d'amore, The Threepenny Opera (per il Lucerne Festival 2006), Idomeneo (per il Lucerne Festival 2007), e Don Giovanni (per il Lucerne Festival 2008).

Come Primo Direttore Ospite della Sinfonietta Cracovia dal 2000, John Axelrod ha diretto nelle più prestigiose sale concertistiche europee, è apparso in un film prodotto per ARTE, e in un DVD registrato ad Auschwitz in memoria dell’Olocausto, prodotto dalla BBC e vincitore dell’Emmy Award nel 2007. Axelrod è anche il fondatore e direttore onorario dell’Orchestra X di Houston, Texas. Fortemente impegnato nella promozione del repertorio contemporaneo, Axelrod ha diretto le prime di lavori firmati da Kaija Saariaho, Jorg Widmann, Marco Stroppa, Michael Gordon, Avner Dorman, Wolfgang Rihm, Marc-André Dalbavie, Pascal Dusapin and Wojciech Kilar. Ha inciso opere di Franz Schreker, Wladyslaw Szpilman, Fazil Say, Rolf Wallin, Leonard Bernstein, fra gli altri, per Naive, SonyClassical, Ondine e Nimbus.
